Delhi’s Vivek Vihar Fire Tragedy: 9 Dead as Residential Building Turns Into ‘Death Trap’
New Delhi, May 3, 2026 — A horrific fire in East Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area has claimed the lives of nine people, including children, in the early hours of Sunday morning. The incident has once again sparked a national debate over urban fire safety and the blatant violation of building bylaws in the national capital.
The Incident: A Sunday Morning Nightmare
The blaze was reported at approximately 3:48 a.m. at building B-13 in Vivek Vihar Phase-I. Within minutes, the fire, suspected to have originated on the second floor, quickly engulfed the third and fourth floors of the four-storey residential structure.
Fourteen fire tenders were rushed to the spot, battling the inferno for nearly three hours before bringing it under control by 6:25 a.m. While fire officials managed to rescue nearly 15 people using ladders and breaking through adjacent walls, nine individuals could not be saved, having succumbed to asphyxiation and severe burn injuries.
A ‘Death Trap’: Safety Lapses Exposed
Preliminary investigations by the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) and local police have revealed a series of catastrophic safety failures that turned the building into a literal death trap for its residents:
- Single Entry/Exit Point: The building had only one narrow staircase serving as both the entry and exit, which was quickly choked by thick black smoke.
- Iron Grilles Hindering Rescue: The rear windows of the building were completely covered with heavy iron grilles, preventing residents from jumping to safety and making it impossible for firefighters to enter from the back.
- Locked Terrace Access: In a final, tragic hurdle, the door leading to the terrace was found locked, depriving residents of a potential escape route to the roof.
- Suspected Cause: Initial reports suggest a short circuit in an air conditioning (AC) unit on the second floor led to an explosion, which rapidly spread the fire through the building’s internal wiring.
Political Response and Compensation
Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families. CM Gupta has ordered a high-level magisterial inquiry into the incident, promising "strictest action" against those found guilty of negligence.
"This is a heart-wrenching tragedy. We have directed the district administration to provide all necessary medical aid to the injured at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and ensure immediate financial support to the victims' families," CM Gupta stated in a press briefing.
