Jabalpur Mourns: Death Toll Rises to 11 in Bargi Dam Cruise Boat Disaster

Jabalpur, May 3, 2026 — The festive atmosphere at the Bargi Dam reservoir turned into a scene of grief this weekend as search teams recovered more bodies following a cruise boat capsize on Saturday evening. The official death toll has now reached 11, with rescue operations continuing for at least two individuals still reported missing.

The Tragedy at Bargi Dam

The incident occurred late Saturday when a private cruise boat, carrying nearly 30 passengers, reportedly hit a submerged object or encountered a sudden gust of wind that caused it to tilt and subsequently overturn in deep waters. While nearby boatmen and NDRF teams managed to rescue 17 people within the first hour, many were trapped beneath the boat’s deck.

As of Sunday evening, divers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Navy have pulled 11 bodies from the reservoir. Among the deceased are three children and four women, most of whom were tourists from nearby districts.

Administrative Crackdown and Safety Concerns

The Jabalpur district administration has suspended the licenses of all private boat operators at Bargi Dam pending a comprehensive safety audit. Preliminary reports suggest that the boat may have been carrying passengers beyond its sanctioned capacity and that many on board were not wearing life jackets.

"This is a massive failure of oversight," said a spokesperson for the local tourist association. "While the dam is a popular weekend getaway, the enforcement of safety protocols like mandatory life jackets and passenger manifestos has been lax."

Relief and Compensation

Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. A high-level committee has also been formed to investigate the exact cause of the accident and recommend permanent safety measures for water-based tourism in the state.

Search operations are expected to continue through Monday morning using side-scan sonar and underwater cameras to locate the remaining missing passengers.
