Podium Finish: India Clinches Bronze in Thomas Cup 2026 After Grit-Filled Campaign in Denmark

Horsens, Denmark, May 3, 2026 — India’s historic run in the Thomas Cup 2026 concluded this weekend with a well-deserved Bronze medal. While the defending-aspirants fell short in the semifinals against a dominant French side, the team’s performance throughout the tournament—especially their clinical quarterfinal victory over Chinese Taipei—has cemented India’s status as a powerhouse in world badminton.

The Quarterfinal Masterclass

The highlight of the campaign was Friday’s 3-0 demolition of a formidable Chinese Taipei squad.

Lakshya Sen set the tone with a grueling three-game comeback victory over Chou Tien-chen (18-21, 22-20, 21-17).
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty followed up with a masterclass in aggressive doubles play, defeating the pair of Wang Chi-lin and Chiu Hsiang-chieh (23-21, 19-21, 21-12).
Ayush Shetty then closed out the tie with a straight-games win over Lin Chun-Yi, securing India’s passage to the semifinals and a guaranteed medal.

The Semifinal Setback: Injury Woes

The semifinal clash against France on Saturday proved to be a hurdle too high. India suffered a major blow even before the first serve, as top-ranked Lakshya Sen was forced to withdraw due to a persistent elbow injury sustained during the quarterfinal.

Despite the best efforts of Kidambi Srikanth and the doubles pairs, India lost the tie 0-3. However, since the Thomas Cup does not have a third-place playoff, India was awarded the Bronze medal alongside the other losing semifinalist.

A Golden Era for Indian Badminton

"While we are disappointed not to reach the final, winning a medal at the Thomas Cup for the second time in three editions shows the depth of our talent," said Pullela Gopichand, India’s Chief National Coach. "The emergence of young players like Ayush Shetty is a fantastic sign for the future."

The Indian team is expected to return home on Tuesday, where a grand reception is being planned by the Badminton Association of India (BAI).
